In a rare move, conservative leaders in the US are warning that Brexit could bring a “hard landing” for the country.
The Conservative Party, in a joint statement with the Tea Party, said they would use the Brexit vote to call for a constitutional convention, in which conservative members would decide whether to run in 2020 or 2022 elections.
“There are some very real fears that we will lose control of our government, and lose the ability to govern effectively,” said the statement.
“We cannot let the Brexit uncertainty, and uncertainty of what happens to our economy and the lives of millions of Americans, continue to paralyse our political system.”
‘Political poison’ In an interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday, US Republican senator Jeff Flake, a member of the House of Representatives, said that the Brexit outcome would have a “negative impact” on his party.
“I think this is the first time in my lifetime that we’re in a position where there’s a political poison in our party,” he said.
“That’s going to be a big factor in determining whether we’re going to have another election or not.”
US President Donald Trump, who is due to leave office next month, has been criticised for his response to the Brexit decision.
The US is the world’s biggest economy, and the country’s largest trading partner.
In a speech to Congress last week, Trump said that he would like to see the US leave the EU, but not before the US renegotiates its trade terms.
“It is important for the United States to fully negotiate a good deal with the European Union, but the United Kingdom has to leave the European single market and the customs union and we have to make sure that we have the ability of moving our economy to the 21st century,” he told lawmakers.
“But if we’re not going to do that, then we should leave the Brexit deal and go back to WTO rules and WTO rules.”‘
Trump’s team’ In a statement, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said that Trump’s “political team” is “in full control of his administration”.
“They’re not in control of their own party, and they’re in full control now of the Trump White House,” he added.
The Republican president has vowed to renegotiate the US trade deal with China, which has long been seen as a key challenge for the GOP.
He also said he will seek a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US.
“The Trump team is in full command of their campaign, they’re not the Trump people,” Graham said.
