President Donald Trump blasted “fake news” stories on Thursday after the media covered a meeting in which Trump Jr. discussed a potential meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“Fake news stories are the new normal,” Trump said in a statement.
“If the fake news story that ran in the New York Times was true, it would have never made it to print.
It would have been a lie.
It’s incredible. “
There is so much fake news out there.
I’m very happy about it. “
But I have to tell you, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.
I’m very happy about it.
That’s what I say.” “
It’s the real thing.
That’s what I say.”
Trump’s tweet on Thursday followed the release of a document outlining the meeting between Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian national who has since claimed she has damaging information on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump Jr.’s email chain, which was also obtained by The Associated Press, said Veselnititskaya “may have information about your father’s financial dealings.”
The Trump Jr.-Veselnitsky email exchange, obtained by the AP and shared with NBC News, appears to have been prompted by the Russian lawyer’s request to the president’s son to attend the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with Veselnitzkaya and Donald Trump Jr..
The emails show that Veselnitor was in fact the subject of a previously undisclosed email exchange between Trump’s son and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort in which the Trump campaign was asked to provide “more information” about Veselnitchks claims about Trump.
The email exchange in question was sent in late December 2016, just after Manafort had resigned as Trump’s campaign chairman.
Manafort also attended the meeting, which Trump called “very short and sweet.”
The AP obtained a copy of the email exchange from a person familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity to discuss the private meeting.
The person said that Trump Jr was told to meet with Vesenitskaya at the meeting’s location at the same time as other people and that Vesenitks statement was “very flattering.”
The emails also show that the Trump family sought assurances from Veselnikov that she would not provide information about the campaign.
Veselnikiks attorney, Natalia Sitchin, told the AP that the campaign was not aware of the meeting with Trump Jr prior to it happening.
“I don’t know the details of what was said.
I have no knowledge about it,” she said.
Trump’s tweets on Thursday came after a report on Thursday night that revealed Veselnitey’s emails had been leaked.
“The information youve shared on this meeting has been shared by several news organizations and they have published it, but theyre only going to publish it after it has been vetted by the media and the FBI,” Trump wrote.
“This is a witch hunt.”
Trump also criticized the media for focusing on the meeting.
“Some of the fake media is trying to destroy the media.
This is the real Fake News.
Fake stories are fake, fake news, the fake press is Fake News!” he wrote.
Trump did not specifically mention the media on Thursday, but the president has used Twitter as a platform to lash out at news outlets over the past several days.
“Just to be clear, I am not under investigation.
As President, I do not accept Russian interference in the 2016 election or collusion with any foreign government,” he wrote in one tweet.
